Thailand is known as the land of smiles, and with good reason. The people are genuinely welcoming and hospitable. From the powdery sand of its southern beaches to its fertile central rice lands and the mountains of the north, this is a country where there is still much to discover. There are vibrant modern cities where you will still find Buddhist temples hazed with incense smoke and lit by candles. But look further and there are other cities, now deserted and crumbling, unsophisticated farming villages as well wilderness regions bright with tropical birds. Blessed with some of the best hotels in the world, whether in bustling Bangkok, on idyllic beaches or in rural areas in the north, Thailand really does have a lot to offer. Weather is a significant issue for Thailand holidays. While white-water rafters may revel in the rain swollen rivers, sun-worshipers usually hope for dry and sunny conditions. Thailand is definitely a place to eat the local food. If you haven’t tasted Thai food in Thailand, you are in for a delightful surprise. Travel north to Chiang Mai, Thailand second-largest city and a centre for excursions to the regions ancient temples, hill tribes and the Golden Triangle. Climb the 300 or so steps to Doi Suthep temple for sweeping views of the city. Phuket boasts some of the finest hotels and resorts in the land. Surrounded by the waters of the Andaman Sea, much of the island’s appeal is the palm fringed white sand beaches, secluded coves and long sweeping bays..

Even if your plans for Thailand mainly involve frolicking on a beach, cozying up to elephants, and eating as much Massaman curry and tom ka gai as humanly possible, you'll probably spend at least a day or two in Bangkok. There's plenty to see and do in the capital, but it's perhaps best to start with the Grand Palace. This is the number one sightseeing attraction in the city, and it's staggering in historical significance and craftsmanship. The grounds are a maze of royal halls, temples, and ancient relics, the most important being Wat Phra Kaeo, Temple of the Emerald Buddha. A relic within this temple is said to be a piece of bone or hair from the enlightened Buddha himself. Allow several hours to do the Grand Palace justice, but if you're up for more walking afterward, you can easily take in some of the city's other major landmarks. The famousWat Po and Wat Arun, the Temple of the Dawn (a great place to watch the sunset), are also nearby. And as Bangkok is a main hub for international travel, it's a great starting point for excursions throughout the country.
